3 Day Trip from Auckland: Suggested Itineraries

Auckland is replete with options when it comes to all kinds of activities. However, you might feel the need to escape the city from time to time. That is perfectly fine since you have many options. Whether you want to escape for a long weekend or wish to embark on that long-awaited road trip, 3 days is more than enough time to enjoy a few must-see destinations that are just outside of Auckland.

Check out these recommended itineraries for a 3-day trip from Auckland. Of course, you can always stay longer but if you’ve only have a weekend to spare, then rest assured you have just the right amount of time.

Auckland to Northland

This road trip from Auckland will take anywhere from 3 to 4 days, depending on how many stops you take. This is one of the best routes if you want a 3-day trip from Auckland to make the most of the fine landscapes and natural features that New Zealand is known for. As you head north, you will travel along State Highway 1.

From Auckland, it won’t be long until you immerse into the laid–back vibe of the region. One of the first stops along the way is the seaside town of Paihia, known as the gateway to the Bay of Islands. This region is made up of 144 islands that is similar to Australia’s Whitsundays. You get the picture – turquoise waters, green countryside, and breathtaking coastline roads. There are plenty of things to do while in Paihia, such as exploring Bay of Islands, swimming with dolphins, or visiting Waitangi Treaty Grounds.

Cape Reinga

Once you leave Paihia, the scenery does not change much as you go towards Cape Reinga, passing the Ninety Mile Beach. The name is actually a misnomer since it only measures 55 miles, not 90, I guess someone thought that “Eighty-Eight Kilometers Beach” isn’t all that catchy. Nonetheless, Cape Reinga is a hit with tourists because of an iconic viewpoint on a cliff by the lighthouse that gazes out into where the Pacific Ocean meets Tasman Sea. That is a powerful sight, so much so that the indigenous people believe that Cape Reinga is the place where the spirits of the dead enter the underworld.

When you head to the Cape, don’t forget to venture inland to see ancient kauri forests. You will find a few natural marvels such as rock jumping spots and natural rock pools.

This particular 3-day trip from Auckland has more interesting spots to offer. Feel free to add any of the following to your destination depending on what you want to see or enjoy:

Puhoi

  • Puhoi is the ultimate destination in New Zealand for cheese lovers. The town offers plenty of excellent pubs wherein you can explore a beer garden. But don’t forget to stop by the Puhoi Valley Cheese wherein you can find a lovely tea room. This destination is only a slight detour from State Highway 1.

Kawakawa

  • Right before you arrive at Paihia, take a detour into Kawakawa. This destination is approximately 45 minutes from the road heading to Whangerei. This is a quirky destination with one of the most unique tourist attractions you’ll find in New Zealand – the Hundertwasser toilets. Trust me – it is worth a pit stop.

Whangarei

  • This is only 2 hours away from Auckland and is recommended if you want to avoid the popular Paihia. Among the top destinations here are the Kauri Park and the Whangerei Falls. If you are spending more time here, you can head to the Poor Knights Island Marine Reserve for some excellent scuba diving.

Auckland to Coromandel Peninsula

Another excellent 3-day trip from Auckland is the Coromandel Peninsula. Three days is more than enough time to make the most of this road trip. This peninsula is located on the North Island and is home to some of New Zealand’s most spectacular coastlines. One of the most frequented attractions here is the famed Cathedral Cove. It is one of the most spectacular sights you’ll bear witness to. Make sure to book a kayaking trip to the cove or walk the cliffs.

Hot Water Beach is another must-visit in this 3-day trip. As the name implies, the geothermal activity underground helps to maintain a water temperature of up to 60 degrees Celsius. All you need is a little shovel and you can dig yourself up a private jacuzzi.

Thames is another noteworthy stop in this itinerary. This seaside town is filled with shopping options and plenty of sheltered beaches. You can stop and go for a swim. Continue your drive towards the town of Coromandel, little spot known for its artistic vibe.

Auckland to Central north island

If you’d rather see what the Central North Island has to offer, then this is what you need to explore on your 3-day trip from Auckland. Rotorua and Taupo are just some of the recommended destinations along this route. If possible, spend at least a night in each of these towns so you can see the best that they have to offer.

You can start off your road trip by driving from Auckland to Rotorua, which will take about 3 hours. This is the centre of tourism in this region. It is best known for its thermal hotspots – from bubbling mud pools to steaming landscapes! Aside from these thermal natural attractions, you can also check out the cultural sights of Rotorua to learn more about the indigenous Māori culture. The Whakarewarewa Thermal Village is the best place to go for this kind of immersive experience.

From Rotorua, it is only a short drive to Taupo. This town is home to the country’s largest lake. Lake Taupo is also home to a diverse array of leisure activities such as bungy jumping, watersports, hiking and biking. For those seeking a more adrenaline-pumping experience, head to the Waikato River and witness the rapids weave their way through narrow canyons. While there, don’t forget to check out the Huka Falls, as well.
