About me

Hi Guys, I'm Free Like Birdy

I started my adventures almost accidently in 2009 by moving to Australia when the global recession hit New Zealand..

It was my first time out of New Zealand for more than a week and I was as green as you can get.

I stumbled my way through securing a backpacker type job and eventually was getting paid to travel around Australia and fundraise for various charities. This was my first inkling I had of how fun life on the road could be.

From there, I saved my pennies and embarked on my first big trip to South East Asia spending 4 months travelling through Thailand, Cambodia Vietnam & Laos. It was official. I was now a backpacker.

I eventually ended up in Europe on a Danish working holiday visa and worked in Denmark for the summer months while exploring Northern Europe. I traversed the fjords of Norway, the lakes of Sweden and Finland and managed a short trip down to Hamburg, Germany  where I drank too much beer and visited the club that The Beatles became famous in.

My way back down under took me to Egypt and my first solo trip and biggest culture shock. This is where I truly fell in love with the travel/backpacker life and I started to think seriously about how I could travel as much as possible for as long as possible…

Current Goal

I am currently aiming to visit 100 countries by the time I’m 40.

The criteria is that I have to stay at least 2 nights in a country so airport layovers obviously don’t count. Ideally, I will try and spend a lot longer and so far have succeeded in doing so.
